Director of Engineering

We’re looking for a high-agency engineering leader who thrives in ambiguity and can align people, systems, and priorities into clear, executable outcomes. This role sits at the intersection of engineering, product, and executive leadership, shaping how high-performing, AI-native teams operate and deliver at scale.
You’ll lead a large, distributed engineering organization while fostering a culture of ownership, trust, and continuous improvement. You will partner closely with the CTO, CPO, and CEO, acting as both a stabilizing force and a catalyst for progress in a fast-moving, high-expectation environment.
What You’ll Do
- Lead and scale execution across multiple engineering teams, ensuring alignment, delivery quality, and consistent operational rigor
- Build deep trust with engineers by creating a culture of psychological safety, ownership, and transparent communication
- Act as a stabilizing leadership presence in a high-change environment, bringing clarity and continuity through frequent organizational shifts
- Partner closely with the CTO in a constructive fashion, using structured communication, clear frameworks, and calm execution
- Translate executive direction into clear, stable operating models that teams can execute against with confidence
- Coach engineers and leaders to operate with autonomy and accountability, reinforcing high standards without creating fear or burnout
- Lead and mentor TPMs, SRE, and Solutions Engineering leadership to ensure strong cross-functional execution
- Drive adoption of modern AI-powered engineering practices, including agentic workflows, AI-assisted development, and rapid iteration cycles
- Improve organizational velocity by identifying systemic bottlenecks, reducing friction, and strengthening cross-team coordination
- Establish clear decision-making frameworks to reduce ambiguity and prevent unnecessary churn from frequent priority or structural changes
- Create strong alignment between Product and Engineering, ensuring roadmaps are realistic, prioritized, and executable
- Communicate effectively at the executive level, synthesizing complex technical realities into clear, actionable insights
- Protect team health and sustainability by managing workload intensity and preventing burnout in a high-demand environment
- Continuously evolve engineering culture toward high performance, trust, safe transparency and long-term scalability
Requirements
- 8+ years of experience in engineering leadership roles within high-growth or complex technical environments
- Proven experience leading multiple engineering teams and managing managers at scale
- Strong track record of partnering with executive leadership to drive complex technical initiatives
- Exceptional emotional intelligence and leadership maturity, with ability to navigate difficult personalities and organizational dynamics
- Experience creating high-trust, high-performance engineering cultures
- Deep understanding of modern software development practices, including AI/ML systems and agentic development workflows
- Ability to operate effectively in both startup and enterprise environments
- Strong communication skills, with ability to translate technical complexity into clear business context
- Demonstrated ability to bring structure, clarity, and stability to fast-changing or ambiguous environments
